Chronic Headaches & Migraines may be resolved/managed with Botox!

Long have the cosmetic benefits of Neuromodulars like Botox been recognized in the beauty industry for helping to smooth furrowed brows and soften the crinkly skin around the eyes. It has been an extremely safe and much sought-after tool for women and men to prolong their youthful appearances and reduce unwanted skin changes from deepening.

Less well known is how this same treatment is being utilized in numerous medical fields for the management of over 50 different physiological conditions. Neuromodulars (like Botox) have been used successfully in these areas for over 20 years in Canada, providing sufferers with new and often highly effective treatment options to help alleviate their discomfort.

So… how do Neuromodulars like Botox and Nuceiva work?

  • Neuromodulars are purified natural proteins which temporarily block the release of neurotransmitters from the nerve, resulting in relaxation of the muscle.

  • Basically, they block the signal from nerve to muscle

  • This treatment is a highly specific localized therapy which acts only upon particular muscles, meaning there are no systemic (full body) effects – it only works on the muscles that are injected.

  • Injections are extremely small and virtually painless, typically only a small pinch is felt.

  • This therapy provides temporary relief, decreasing overactive muscle contraction, reducing pain, increasing comfort, and improving overall quality of life

Who can benefit from this treatment?

  • Individuals suffering from Chronic Headaches/Migraines, Excessive Sweating (Hyperhydrosis) and TMJ Syndrome.

  • Therapeutic Botox has been approved for use in Canada for individuals from 2 years up. There are very few exceptions, and these will be discussed during your appointment.

What types of conditions can be treated by Naturopathic Physicians in BC?

  • Almost any form of Chronic Headaches (with approval from Health Canada in 2011!) including:

  • Migraine

  • Tension-Type Headache

  • Cervicogenic Headache

  • Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

  • Palms &/or Soles

  • Underarms (axillae)

  • Temporomandibular Syndrome (TMJ): Grinding of the teeth and/or painful jaw clicking/popping

How long do Neuromodulars take to work and how long does the injections last?

  • It is of course highly individualized, but results will typically be noticed within 2-8 days, with peak efficacy at 7-14 days

  • Duration of action is typically 3-4 months, at which point treatment is repeated for ongoing relief

  • Note though: for excessive sweating, benefits usually last upwards of 6-7 months!

Is this treatment covered?

  • Many Extended Health plans will cover Therapeutic Botox for Tension Headaches, Chronic Migraines, TMJ Syndrome as well as Hyperhidrosis.
